CONSIDERING GIVING A PET AS A GIFT?  7 REASONS WHY SHELTERS DISLIKE ADOPTING DOGS OR CATS WITHOUT MEETING THE EVENTUAL OWNER

Most shelters will not allow the adoption of a pet as a gift to someone else.  There are many reasons for this.  In order to protect both the pet (which is the main job of a shelter), and the potential adopter, all rescues have procedures that they follow. As much as it hurts to tell an enthusiastic gift-giver “no”, the shelters must do so.  Here are a few of the reasons why you should never give a pet as a gift: This post contains affiliate links. When I worked as an Adoption Counselor, I had two ladies come in to look at dogs to adopt. On speaking with them, I learned that they were sisters, looking for a dog to take home to their 70+ year old mother.  It seems their mother’s beloved dog had just passed away, and the daughters thought it…

9 FREE PET-THEMED LESSON PLAN SITES. HELP YOUR ANIMAL-LOVING CHILD LEARN BY STARTING SCHOOL WITH SOMETHING THEY’RE ALREADY INTERESTED IN

With homeschooling and distance learning becoming the norm, I’ve found some free pet-themed lesson plans from around the Internet. If your family is full of animal lovers, you now have the option of concentrating at least some of your efforts on subjects your child already loves. This strategy has proven very successful over the years, particularly when it comes to reluctant learners. I have pulled a few of the options from each site to do a more thorough review.  These are not ALL the resources available – pay each website a visit to discover more lessons. Bear in mind that I am not recommending any of the resources listed below – the choice of curriculum should always be made with your families’ values and beliefs in mind. You will embrace some of these resources, and will reject others – this post is to show you some of the options. This post contains affiliate links. WHAT IS SPAYING AND NEUTERING? HELP LIMIT OVERPOPULATION AND EUTHANASIA AND 9 OTHER BENEFITS OF SPAYING AND NEUTERING YOUR DOG OR CAT.

What is spaying and neutering and why should I have it done to my pets?  Spaying and neutering provide many benefits, from ensuring better health to curbing unwanted behavior to preventing overpopulation and the resultant euthanizing of healthy animals. WHAT IS DONE DURING A SPAY PROCEDURE? The most common spay removes the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus.  Your pet will be put under general anesthesia (unconscious), and one incision made.  Everything is removed through this one opening, and the area is closed with two layers of stitches. ALTERNATE SPAY METHODS Sometimes, other options are presented.  One is a hysterectomy where the uterus and part of the fallopian tubes are removed but the ovaries remain; the other is removal of the ovaries, and the uterus remains. All of these procedures are done under general anesthesia. Whichever method is chosen, the pet will be unable to reproduce. RECOVERY FROM SPAYING Your pet will have to wear a cone (Elizabethan collar) for up to seven days to prevent them from licking or scratching and reopening the incision. Activity should be strictly limited for the…

WHY DO PEOPLE SURRENDER THEIR PETS? HERE ARE THE 7 MOST COMMON REASONS. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ADOPT – MOST RESCUE PETS ONLY NEED SOMEONE TO BE THEIR “FOREVER” PERSON

Why do people surrender their pets?  Many people think that dogs and cats in shelters are somehow flawed.  Otherwise, why would an owner surrender them?  But the reasons are as varied as the owner’s lifestyles and core beliefs.  Most pets are NOT given up due to serious behavior issues. WHY DO PEOPLE SURRENDER THEIR PETS? A DEATH IN THE FAMILY Often a much-loved pet is owned by someone living alone.  When that person dies, no one in the family is willing or able to make the pet a new member of their own family.  So, the poor animal is surrendered to a shelter. These pets are frightened and confused – and just need some time to regain their equilibrium.  Imagine waking up one morning, being driven to a strange place, and left, sometimes after years of love and attention from your human.  You’d be shell-shocked, too. ADOPTING AN ANIMAL AFTER THE DEATH OF THEIR OWNER Honestly, some pets will mourn their owners for a very long time.  Others will bounce back pretty quickly.  Adopting an animal from this situation will take…

HOW TO FIND A LOST PET. KEEP YOUR DOG OR CAT SAFE AT HOME OR FIND THEM QUICKLY IF LOST

HOW TO FIND A LOST PET There’s nothing worse than knowing your pet is lost and alone – particularly in bad weather, or if he is ill or on medication. Thankfully, there are many steps you can take to keep your pet from running off, or find her quickly should the worst happen. HOW TO PREVENT YOUR PET FROM GETTING LOST FENCING If you have a fenced yard, set aside a weekly time to walk around the entire perimeter to check for loose wire, missing boards, or holes. Even a dog who shows no interest in wandering can get enticed by something interesting happening just out of reach.  A deer, a squirrel, or, in the case of my dog, a hawk bringing down prey beyond the fence.  (Ask me how I know about the last one….) Having a set time to inspect your fencing will keep many a dog from getting lost. INVISIBLE FENCING Although this works well for some dogs, I’m not a big fan. There are breeds, terriers in particular, which consider an invisible fence just a suggestion.  These…

ALLERGIES TO PETS. IF YOU’RE ALLERGIC TO DOGS OR CATS, CAN YOU STILL HAVE A PET? FIND OUT WHAT CAUSES ALLERGIES, AND HOW YOU MAY BE ABLE TO FIND THE RIGHT PET TO ADOPT

WHAT IS AN ALLERGY? An allergy is the body’s reaction to something it considers to be dangerous.  Even if, by itself, the allergen is not dangerous, this does not affect the likelihood of an allergic attack.  The body then sends out histamines to repel what it considers to be an invader. Where pets are concerned, the sensitivity is generally to dog or cat dander (pieces of skin shed by animals), to urine, or to saliva. WHICH PET IS MORE LIKELY TO CAUSE ALLERGIES? Cats are more often the reason for an allergic reaction than dogs.  And, strangely, female cats tend to cause more sensitivity than males.   Dogs are only 50% as likely to cause allergic reactions in humans than are cats. ARE PET ALLERGIES BECOMING MORE COMMON? The answer seems to be “yes”. Although it was once believed that children were healthier being protected from exposure to dirt, animals, and dust, the opposite seems to be true.  Babies growing up with dogs or cats are actually LESS likely to develop allergies. WHAT DOES AN ALLERGIC REACTION LOOK LIKE? Allergic reactions, just…
