8 HUNGARIAN DOG BREEDS – THEIR STORIES

Different environments and needs determine which type of dog a region develops. In Hungary, there are three different types of dog breeds – livestock protectors, herding dogs, and hunting hounds. HUNGARIAN DOG BREEDS - HERDING DOGS PULI The Puli is a small, herding dog with a long, corded coat. They have been described as a “mop on springs” due to their high energy level.  This breed will need a lot of exercise, and will do best in a very active home. Weighing no more than 35 pounds, the Puli looks to be much larger due to its weatherproof double coat. Lack of size doesn’t make it any less effective as a sheep herder – they’ve been known to jump on a sheep’s back to turn the flock. STATUS Recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1936, the most popular dog breeds rank Pulis at 160 out of 197 registered breeds. Due to their high grooming needs, and near constant need for activity, they are a difficult breed for new dog owners. HISTORY Although the Puli can trace his lineage…

DOG BREEDS FROM CANADA. LEARN WHICH BREEDS CAME FROM THIS NORTHERN COUNTRY, WHAT THEY ARE LIKE, AND WHICH WOULD MAKE A PERFECT PET FOR YOU?

As is to be expected in a cold climate, Canada is not the home of small or fragile dogs.  Dog breeds from Canada tend to be thick coated, hardy, and large, or smooth coated working dogs – no tiny lapdogs here! Many of Canada’s dog breeds have with thick, water-repellent undercoats able to withstand a harsh, long winter.  Several originated in the far north as working dogs and protectors, others were bred for coastal conditions.  Here are a few you’re familiar with, and a couple you probably have never heard of: CANADIAN ESKIMO DOG STATUS – THREATENED. Fewer than 300 dogs still exist. HISTORY First bred by the Inuit of the Arctic regions, the date of origin of the Canadian Eskimo Dog cannot be determined.  In the years between 1950 and 1970, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police slaughtered thousands of Inuit sled dogs.  Exact figures are unknown, but the loss of canine life was overwhelming. Although the Inuit claim that this was done for intimidation, the RCMP still maintains that it was to weed out diseased animals. Whatever the purpose, the…

11 SCOTTISH DOG BREEDS – RANGING FROM THE THIRD MOST POPULAR TO THE 182ND. ARE ONE OF THESE BREEDS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Many dog breeds originated in Scotland, a mountainous and rocky country with lots of open spaces.  Due to necessity and the terrain, Scottish dog breeds include a few terriers, used to control the vermin population.  Scotland also produced three few shepherd breeds, a retriever, a setter, and a sight hound used for hunting.  Although all the breeds here are still viable, some are rarely seen in the United States, which is a shame.  Read through these interesting breeds and see if one is right for you. CAIRN TERRIER HISTORY The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest of the Scottish dog breeds, originating on the Isle of Skye in the far northwest.  The word “cairn” denotes an outcropping of rocks, as these dogs’ original purpose was to hunt otter.  One of my personal favorites, this breed was included with all the other terrier breeds until 1912.  Then, they were split from the other four breeds into their own group and first appeared in the United States in 1913. BEHAVIOR Cairn Terriers (I speak from personal experience here) are feisty, independent, and…

ST. PATRICK’S DAY TRIVIA – WHICH SIX PET BREEDS ORIGINATED IN IRELAND?

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, here are six pet breeds from Ireland.  Some are better known than others.  All are Irish through and through.  Happy Saint Patrick's Day! KERRY BLUE TERRIER HISTORY Although no one knows when this breed was first created, Kerry Blue Terriers were highly prized in rural Ireland as early as the 1700s, and perhaps much earlier.  Bred as vermin catchers, they helped keep mice and rats from consuming the grain of the farmer's who prized them.  Multi-talented, Kerry Blues can also retrieve game and herd sheep and cattle.   They are, today, occasionally used as police dogs. First recognized as a distinct breed in 1924, although it was shown in 1922 at the Westminster Dog Show, a Kerry Blue Terrier Club was founded in the United States in 1926.  This breed is quite uncommon today. PERSONALITY Kerry Blue’s have the typical terrier tenacity.  They are not known for friendliness with other dogs, and, unless socialized at an early age, do best as an only pet.  You will find, however, that the Kerry is often child friendly.  Terriers…
